Vintage Life Preserver: USS IMUA

Yesterday, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, I stumbled across this awesome vintage life preserver - from the USS IMUA.  I didn't really know what the USS IMUA stood for, so I did a little research.  In Hawaiian imua means go forward. How awesome is that?

I have a great appreciation for and feel we all owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve our country.  Imagine being on a ship for months at a time - away from home, away from your loved ones, away from the comforts we all take for granted.

To me, this life preserver not only represents the USS IMUA, it represents the soliders who live and die for this country, to protect us all.

Aside from the history of this piece, I can't help but fall in love with the aesthetics of this life preserver.  It makes me want to dedicate a room in my home to nautical, historical pieces and dream of the many sites the piece has been.
